South Coast NSW Batemans Bay: Education & Training

Eurobodalla Adult Education Centre Inc. (EAEC)
Adult Ed for quality lifelong learning in the Eurobodalla

The Eurobodalla Adult Education Centre’s (EAEC’s) mission statement is: To create opportunities for all adults to participate in quality lifelong learning in the Eurobodalla Shire.

This means delivering high standards of education and training to the Community according to the particular needs of the time.

‘Adult Ed’, as it has affectionately become known, was founded in 1983. An active, visionary group from the community organised an open public meeting to discuss the formation of a community education organization that would provide training throughout the Shire to support identified education and training needs of all adults within the community.

Adult Ed has continued to deliver education to the community in both general interest courses and in more recent years are meeting the greater demand for Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses – ie. courses for work.

Each year we deliver in excess of 500 training courses to around 5000 participants.  This includes individual training programs for businesses to meet their current staff training needs.

The Centre continues to meet the large demand for licensing related courses such as RSA, RCG, OHS, First Aid, Hygiene for food handlers and Traffic Control.

We offer the largest choice of courses locally, with greater flexibility and personalized attention.

Individual tuition is available on request and training programs are designed to suit the needs of the work place and the participant. Training can be conducted at our Centre or in the work environment. Recently, we have delivered personalized training in: Myob, Excel, Access, Publisher, PowerPoint, First Aid, OHS, Management skills, Report writing, coffee, Digital photography, Epi-pen, Assist with Medication and the list goes on, basically any one of our 110 advertised courses could be delivered to individuals or business.

Adult Ed receives recurrent funding from the Government to deliver VET courses to our community, this helps us to maintain our office and reception staff, we are also registered with the Department of Education & Training (DET) – through the Illawarra state training centre Wollongong, to apply for and receive funds to develop VET programs that will support skill requirements in our local region.

We consult with Business and Industry to develop and deliver training programs that support the employment needs of our local workforce.

Programs can be developed to assist participants gain work to support an identified skill shortage or to develop business and personal management skills, particularly interpersonal and team skills, of existing workers/managers.

Industry involvement has been a key element in ensuring that the VET content meets local business needs and provides participants with the latest in theories and practice.

We can work with business/Industry to develop programs that build the capability of the participants so that they can effectively operate in environments where the rate of change and continued professional development is speeding up and learners need to increasingly take responsibility for their ongoing skills development.

Our programs are designed to support the premise that business environments are flexible, dynamic and evolutionary, constantly adapting to meet the changing nature and needs of consumers in a global economy.

A strategy we employ in our VET programs is the engagement of local business professionals who attend the training sessions, providing information regarding their profession, the skills and knowledge required and relevant aspects of working within the context of local business and industry. They provide valid and reliable information and insight as to the needs and expectations of businesses today.  This has been valuable in influencing and encouraging participants to engage in their own personal and professional skills development.

Participants become engaged in an atmosphere of professionalism, encouraged to attend local business functions and network with Industry representatives for self and team development.

In conclusion:

Adult Ed are providing a contemporary model of VET delivery.

Through consultation and collaboration with industry professionals, we foster a learner centered training environment, where individuals became work ready people that generate innovative ideas and fresh perspectives to continued education and self development, critical attributes in developing a competitive advantage and business success.

With continued support from local business professionals, we will build on our educational successes and help develop community members into workforce leaders.

Adult Ed remains committed to community development through education and, after 24 years, continues ‘to create opportunities for all adults to participate in quality lifelong learning in the Eurobodalla Shire’.
